Robert Johnson was born in Hopewell, Virginia and studied at the Art Students
League of New York. He studied with Robert Beverly Hale, Michael Burban and
David Leffel. He is a signature member of the Oil Painters of America and
the Allied Artists of America. Robert Johnson teaches at the Scottsdale
Artists School and other private workshops. He is a graduate of Duke
University and Duke University Law School. He lives in Vienna, Virginia with
his wife, Virginia and their daughter Lisa Blake.
After graduating from law school, Johnson spent several years in living in
Europe where his original intent was to follow Cezanne’s footsteps. Along
the way he fell in love with the Old Masters: the rich paint quality, the
sure handed draftsmanship, and the ever present human dimension. When
Johnson decided to leave his law practice to devote himself full time to
painting he did so in response to Nietzsche’s comment, “It is not enough to
have talent. You must give yourself permission to have it.”
Robert Johnson talks about his philosophy of life as a painter in his book
“On Becoming a Painter.
One of the great secrets of painting is what a joyful process it can be. It
was my salvation; a way to make sense of a chaotic universe and find a deep
sense of purpose… Each brush strokeis a unique living record of an artists’
personality – his view of life and beauty on the day the brush touched the
canvas. It is unique as a fingerprint.
